One of the Last Paradise Oasis in the Mediterranean

The area of the Vis Archipelago encompasses the island of Vis and the surrounding islands of Biševo, Sveti Andrija, Brusnik, Jabuka and Palagruža.As far as geology, this is the most attractive area of the Adriatic, formed from the oldest and the youngest formations of rock. Parts of the Vis archipelago are built from volcanic rock. Such rocks are unique in the Adriatic area and are easily distinguished from other Adriatic islands which are predominantly sedimentary rocks.

OUTDOOR & TRAVEL ADVENTURES by Marino Mazor – OTOK JABUKA / JABUKA ISLAND – The most remote island in Croatia! – drone shots

Croatia’s hidden island where the compass needles are going crazy

Just under 100 metres high, the rock is one of the most remote islands off the Croatian coast and is considered one of the last Mediterranean oases.

You hardly see Jabuka on maps. The pyramidal rock in the middle of the Adriatic Sea, less than 100 metres high, is one of the islands farthest from the Croatian coast. It is already 70 kilometres from Komiza on Vis. The uninhabited island is far from all the main sea routes and connections in the Adriatic Sea, so people rarely visit it. Even when they do, they can have problems.

Islander attacking drones

It is not entirely true that Jabuka is uninhabited. It is true that it is not permanently inhabited by humans, but it is still believed to be home to the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), which is considered to be the fastest animal in the world – it can reach speeds of more than 300 kilometres per hour when it crashes on its prey. According to the website turistickeprice.hr, the peregrine falcon that nests on the island occasionally attacks the drones of curious tourists. The island is said to have been a famous falcon hunting ground in the past, and in the 17th century, falconers even built a house on the island. The island suffered a sadder fate after the Second World War, when it was allegedly used by the then JNA to train pilots in target practice. In 1958, it was declared a geological natural monument.
